Arlington_va_cemetaryARLINGTON, VA - MAY 27: Mary McHugh mourns her dead fiance Sgt. James Regan at "Section 60" of the Arlington National Cemetery May 27, 2007. Regan, an American Special Forces soldier, was killed by an IED explosion in Iraq in February of this year, and this was the first time McHugh had visited the grave since the funeral. Section 60, the newest portion of the vast national cemetery on the outskirts of Washington D.C, contains hundreds of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I’m too young to remember the Vietnam War, but I’ve heard many people compare the Iraq War to Vietnam. We failed to help Vietnam become a democracy. Now we do business with Vietnam. Last I checked, Vietnam is still a communist country.

So far we haven’t been able to help Iraq become a democracy. The problem with Iraq is that historically, the Middle East is not a conducive environment for democracy.

Put yourself in the position of being a king, queen or dictator in the Middle East today. You’re sitting on a gazillion barrels of oil. You’re loving life. The Western world comes and sucks up to you ‘cause you’ve got the candy. Everybody wants to be your best friend. You live in a palace made out of gold. You look at everything around you and you say to yourself: It’s good to be the King.

Now, a well-meaning, fast-talking American comes in and tries to convince you to transform your country into a democracy. They tell you in the long term, it’s best for your people. You’ve watched TV and you know that in America, the headlines are dominated by Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. You don’t approve of celebrities running your country. You decide being a King is the best option for your country and many of your subjects actually agree. War begins.

Iraq_civilians_killed THE WORLD IS TURNING AGAINST US

Osama bin Laden is still free and Iraq and most of the Middle East is against us. Most of the world disapproves the Iraq war. The price of oil has shot up from twenty-seven bucks to over ninety dollars, and the war has caused Iraq’s oil production to be cut in half. More American troops and Iraqis die every day.

WE NEED TO HELP OUR HEROES

It infuriates me that our soldiers, who fought so bravely for our country, aren’t taken care of properly when they come home with without limbs or with permanent, debilitating injuries.

Our returning soldiers need more help paying for quality medical care, finding jobs and readjusting to civilian life. And we should certainly help the families of our fallen heroes. We don’t do enough.

BETTER USES OF OUR DEFENSE BUDGET

We spend over $400 billion a year on the military. Why do we still have military bases in South Korea, Japan and Europe? If we shut them down we could spend that money on better education and other programs desperately needed within our own borders. Anyone remember Hurricane Katrina?

China and Japan are powerful enough to take care of themselves in Asia. I seriously doubt North Korea would ever have the balls to attack China.

Japan needs take care of their own military expenditures. We’re never going to be able to keep China in check, so why try? Let China protect their own turf and the countries around them. Let it be their problem.

WE HAVE WARS AT HOME

Many parts of the U.S.-Mexican border aren’t safe for anyone because of drug wars and human trafficking.

Nuevo Laredo is becoming like Iraq Let’s put our displaced troops from Middle East and the rest of the world on our own borders.

To me, building a wall seems –un-American. We, (MTV and CNN) helped bring down the Berlin War. Now we want to build one here? I don’t get it. Someone please explain that to me.

Illegal immigration is a completely out of hand. When I lived in Europe, if you crossed the border illegally, you’d get your ass shot. Here, if you enter illegally, they give you a driver license and pay for your medical bills. Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy? Let’s take care of our country first.

What would Putin do about illegal immigration here in United States?
